Cape Carnage: Killer Catch and Pernel Media history titles snapped up by buyers

Cape Carnage: Killer Catch, Vanished History, Commando Missions and a raft of Pernel Media history series have been snapped up by myriad international buyers in deals brokered by Cineflix Rights.

Cape Carnage: Killer Catch, the 10-part UKTV/Seven Network/TVNZ series following extreme fishing family the Daveys as they make a living from one of the most dangerous jobs on earth, has been acquired by National Geographic Channel and Viasat World for Scandinavia and Central and Eastern Europe.

Elsewhere, Shark Teeth Films’ 10-part Bell Media title Vanished History, which investigates enigmatic mysteries, has sold to Foxtel, RTL, Mediaset, Discovery and Hearst Networks for Benelux and Africa.

SBS, Société Radio-Canada, Foxtel and Creo South Korea have all acquired Commando Missions, the four-part series recounting top-secret operations by special forces. The latest deals follow sales to Hearst Networks and Czech TV.

Pernel Media’s Alexander the Great

French indie Pernel Media’s Alexander the Great: Legendary Conqueror, Vikings: The Empire of the North Sea and Ramses the Great: King of Ancient Egypt have also travelled internationally.

The trio of Canal+ series (of which Alexander the Great and Vikings are also made for TV5 Quebec) have sold to Viasat World across CEE and Scandinavia, RTL (Germany), Hearst Networks (Turkey and Middle East), ZDF (Germany), SBS (Australia), Disney (Benelux), YLE (Finland), Movistar (Spain), DR (Denmark), and Discovery (Iberia).

Sandra Piha, senior vice-president of sales, pan-regional, UK, Eire, and Scandinavia at Cineflix Rights, said: “World War II documentaries which shed new light on military strategies and operations remain consistently popular with audiences, and we’re also seeing a lot of demand from buyers for ‘history mystery’ content.

“We’re delighted to have closed deals for two of our newest titles from this genre, along with the latest series from our long-term partners McAvoy Media, who are adept at delivering long-running successful franchises for networks worldwide.”

Richard Life, senior vice-president of acquisitions and co-productions, added: “Pernel is a world leader at creating compelling blue-chip history documentaries which bring iconic figures and civilisations to life combining new revelations, expert knowledge and high quality, cinematic dramatisations.”

The factual sales come off the back of several pick-ups for BBC1 prime-time crime thriller Virdee. The series has been bought by Canal+ (Netherlands), SVT (Sweden), Filmin (Spain), BritBox for its platforms across Norway, Finland and Denmark, and BBC Studios for its BBC First and BBC Player platforms across Asia.

Based on A.A. Dhand’s best-selling novels, the Magical Society-produced BBC1 thriller follows Harry Virdee (Staz Nair, Rebel Moon), a Bradford cop hunting down a serial killer. His personal life is in chaos, disowned by his family for crossing a religious divide by marrying his wife, Saima (Aysha Kala, Criminal Record), a woman he loves beyond anyone or anything else.
