Netflix and Amazon’s commissioning activity across APAC has soared over the past six months, making the region the world’s biggest in terms of first-run streaming scripted series orders.

APAC had previously been third in the pecking order behind North America and Western Europe, according to Ampere Analysis.

But the UK-headquartered firm’s data in the first half of the year shows that more than a third (36%) of first-run scripted orders from leading global streamers are now originating from APAC.

The region secured 70 first-run scripted commissions during the period versus 46 for North America and 44 for Western Europe, and 34 for all other regions combined.

Ampere APAC’s rise down to Prime Video and Netflix, whose combined first-run orders in Western Europe and North America remained almost flat compared to H1 2025.

India led APAC with 25 scripted orders, fueled by Prime Video’s commissioning push across multiple Indian languages. South Korea remained second by volume and fuelled by Netflix commissions.

Crime thrillers were among the strongest genres and made up one-third of commissions, but sci-fi and fantasy fell sharply.

Geographically, Taiwan and the Philippines recorded nine and seven new scripted series commissioned respectively during the first six months, as streamers look to tap into new markets.

In Taiwan, Netflix quadrupled its new scripted series orders compared to last year, with shows such as medical drama How to Survive Med School and influencer-led crime investigation Million-follower Detective.

In the Philippines, Amazon was top with five new series announcements over the past six months, including the romance drama The Loyalty Game.

Cyrine Amor, senior research manager at Ampere, said: “APAC has become increasingly important to global streamers for two reasons: it offers attractive opportunities for subscriber growth, while Asian content is increasingly finding audiences far beyond its home markets.

“India, South Korea and Japan remain at the heart of commissioning activity, but growth in markets such as Taiwan and the Philippines shows how widely streamers are now looking for locally produced content with regional and global potential.”
