Travel series launch underlines Japanese giant’s expansion strategy with global streamer
Disney+ is to launch Nippon TV’s upcoming travel reality show, which features popular J-pop boy band Snow Man, globally immediately after its broadcast debut in Japan.
Traveling with Snow Man was commissioned last year as part of a broader pact between the Japanese broadcaster and Disney+ in Japan, which has seen them working together on unscripted fare.
The companies have now said the 10 x 22-minute travelogue will make its debut on 27 July on Nippon TV, before an “uncut” version with additional scenes is rolled out on Disney+ in Japan and globally.
The series is being produced by Nippon TV and features the nine-member boy band as they journey north from Okinawa to Hokkaido experiencing regional cuisines and meeting locals.
Takashi Kato, producer and director, said: “What stood out to me in our conversations with the group is their deep passion for their work and the strong bond they share. This series captures all of that and more.”
The show will be the first-ever unscripted travel show from Japan to be released on Disney+, while the global release plans form part of Nippon TV’s strategy to expand its international reach.
The Japanese giant launched a new internationally facing unscripted production outfit in Tokyo in June, while also appointing formats chief Tom Miyauchi to lead a new business hub in LA and striking a development pact with Canada’s Blue Ant Studios in the same month.
