Amazon’s Prime Video is delving into its MGM library for its latest scripted series with a TV-skewing expansion of the Creed and Barbershop movie franchises, alongside a handful of new docuseries.

Delphi, which was unveiled ahead of Prime Video’s upfront on Monday in New York, is set within the Delphi Gym from the Creed and Rocky movies and follows young boxers as they fight for fame and glory.

Marco Ramirez (Daredevil) is attached as showrunner and executive producer, alongside Creed movie star Michael B. Jordan and Liz Raposo via their Outlier Society banner, which has an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios.

Winkler Films’ Irwin Winkler, David Winkler and Charles Winkler are also attached on the project, which has been in the works for several years.

The movie is the latest MGM-owned title to be remade for Amazon, which also has a prequel series to Legally Blonde in the pipeline, titled Elle, that Prime confirmed yesterday would debut this summer.

There is also a Tomb Raider drama planned, and Prime Video also revealed on Monday that 2002 movie Barbershop will be rebooted for TV.

The show, confirmed ahead of Amazon’s upfront in New York City, stars Jermaine Fowler (Ricky Stanicky) and is being written and exec produced by Marshall Todd from the original film.

Max Searle (Neon) is co-showrunner and executive producer, with Kevin Hart’s label Hartbeat, Prominent Productions and State Street Pictures attached, with Amazon MGM Studios producing.

The adaptation revolves around Travis ‘Trav’ Porter (Fowler), who endeavours to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, a legendary barber at the iconic Calvin’s barbershop in Chicago.

Vernon Sanders, global head of television Amazon MGM Studios, said: “The television adaptation of this iconic film franchise is in excellent hands with co-showrunners Max Searle and Marshall Todd. We couldn’t be happier with their collaboration and hard work to bring Calvin’s Chicago-based barbershop to life for a new audience on Prime Video.”

Prime Video has also confirmed Fallout has secured a third season commission ahead of its second series debut in December.

The drama, which is based on the hit video game of the same name, is from Amazon MGM Studios and Kilter Films, in association with Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks.

Docuseries & talent lead unscripted

On the unscripted front, Prime Video confirmed another two series of Beast Games are in the works and revealed two sports documentaries from Skydance Sports and NFL Films.

The Home Team: NY Jets is a six-part docuseries that follows six New York Jets players and their partners through the 2024-25 regular season, while an untitled feature-length documentary will explore the life of NFL receiver Terrell Owens.

Another untitled docuseries is also in the works that will track high-profile female chief execs whose business ventures move centre stage in their lives.

Stars including Serena Williams and pop star Thalia will feature, with Fifth Season-backed Blink49 Studios and Amazon MGM Studios producing. Williams and Caroline Currier of Nine Two Six Productions exec produce with Blink49’s Tara Long and Nadine Rajabi.

Prime Video also confirmed that WWE star Mike ‘The Miz’ Mizanin would be hosting the US reboot of its upcoming competition show American Gladiators.

The US-skewing version of the format, which follows a BBC reboot in the UK, will be supported by the launch of a new FAST channel that offers more than 200 episodes from the original US show that aired during the 1990s.
