Sky News has promoted Jonathan Levy, the former head of its political unit, to head of news gathering.

Levy, who joined the broadcaster in 2002 from NBC London, will take charge of the news agenda Sky News delivers to viewers in the UK and 115 countries from August.

Levy will work closely with head of Sky News John Ryley and his deputy Chris Birkett to ensure the channel continues to break stories across its range of platforms which includes TV, online, mobile, radio and iPad.

During his time at the broadcaster, Levy led Sky News’ coverage of two general elections and also played a pivotal role in Sky’s bid to broadcast the first ever leaders’ debates.

Ryley said the promotion capped one of the most successful in Sky News’ history. “Jonathan is a first rate journalist and his role is absolutely vital within the organisation,” he said.
