Comedian Peter Kay and various chart-topping acts are to take charge of BBC digital station 6 Music's programming as part of The BBC 6 Music Selector.

Kay, whose rendition of (Is This The Way To) Amarillo? went to number one, Foo Fighters, Franz Ferdinand and Kaiser Chiefs will each take control of the station for a day, with Foo Fighters the first to take the reins on 12 December.

Each act will be able to champion a favourite artist, pick an album of the day, or select live performances from the BBC's archive. The Kaiser Chiefs have already commissioned a new session from tour mates The Cribs.

The digital-only station has previously let Radiohead and the Manic Street Preaches take control of the station for a week each in 2003 and 2004 respectively.

BBC 6 Music's head of programmes, Ric Blaxill, said it was "an honour" for the network that high profile artists wanted to take part in The 6 Music Selector.

"I am particularly pleased to welcome Peter Kay, who will add a light comic touch to the musical mix."
