Channel 5 will give Big Brother viewers the chance to vote over Facebook for the first time, when it resurrects the reality show next month.

The broadcaster is working with the social networking site as well as producer Endemol and agency Mobile Interactive Group to create an app that gives viewers the option to vote for contestants using Facebook’s Credits payment system.

Pricing has yet to be determined and Facebook will not be the only voting mechanism, but viewers will be able to use Credits to vote either through their laptops or smartphones.

C5 secured a deal with Endemol to bring back Big Brother after Channel 4 dropped the format after 10 years.

The social media and digital strategy for the new series is also expected to include video highlights, available on a dedicated website as well as on Facebook, and real-time news and video updates.

A spokesman for the broadcaster said: “Channel 5 and Endemol are working on a raft of social media initiatives which we’ll be running alongside the new series of Big Brother. The full package will be unveiled in the run up to the show’s launch this summer.”

A Big Brother Twitter feed was established on 29 June.
