The BBC has picked up rights to Prime Video’s Indian remake of The Traitors, with the deal among more than 1,700 hours of finished tape sales struck to date by distributor All3Media International.

The sales arm revealed the figures at Content Europe, selling finished tape versions of The Traitors franchise into 50 territories, with the Indian versions set to be available on BBC streamer iPlayer.

It will join adaptations from Ireland, the US, New Zealand and Australia on the service, plus both UK versions, on the BBC streamer.

The 10 x 60-minute version of Prime Video’s Hindi show is hosted by media personality Karan Johar and sees 20 celebrities joining the game of trust and deception, which is set against the backdrop of a palace in Suryagarh, Rajasthan. A second series is in production.

Other deals struck by All3MI include Bell Media’s SVOD platform Crave in Canada taking rights to 11 adaptations – in addition to its own adaptation – hosting versions from New Zealand, France, Australia, the US, the Netherlands, India, Hungary, Ireland, French Canada, and the UK (regular and celebrity versions).

Network 10 in Australia has acquired The Traitors UK and The Celebrity Traitors, alongside versions from India, New Zealand and the US, while RTL Netherlands - the original broadcaster of The Traitors - has licensed versions from Flemish Belgium, the UK, the US, and Australia.

The format was originally known as De Verraders and was created and developed by IDTV in cooperation with RTL Creative Unit. It debuted on RTL 4 in the Netherlands in 2021 and has since been remade in 40 territories.

Maartje Horchner, exec vice presidnet of content at All3Media International, said: “We’re proud to be the home of so many hit versions of this much-loved franchise.

“As well as watching their own territory’s local series, there is huge interest from fans in seeing multiple versions of the show, enabling them to dive into all the gripping twists and turns the game delivers from around the world.”
