Wentworth: The Next Chapter is set to follow characters from the original show as they make new lives on the outside.

The commission was confirmed by former star Danielle Cormack during Australia’s AACTA Awards and will explore how the former prisoners deal with parole.

The original series was based on former TV drama Prisoner and was produced by Fremantle, running for 100 episodes between 2013 and 2021.

It went on to air in over 170 territories worldwide and pushed female-led storytelling. “The next chapter will continue that legacy, taking the story beyond the prison walls and into a new world of redemption and survival,” Foxtel said.

The show will be labelled as a Binge original and will feature characters and draw elements from Wentworth, while forging its own narrative including “the unpredictable reality of life on parole.”

Lana Greenhalgh, director of scripted originals, Foxtel Group, said: “We’re incredibly proud of the legacy of Wentworth and excited to reveal what we’re creating in this bold new chapter.

“The next iteration honors everything fans loved about the world, while opening the door to a new era of formidable and compelling characters driven by fresh, provocative storylines. The project is at an exciting stage of development, and we look forward to sharing more details soon.”
