It centres on an MI6 agent known as Martha (pronounced Marta) who enters into a dangerous love triangle while living in East Berlin in 1982.

The story explores a shadowy world of counterespionage and tracks how Martha is blind-sided by desire in a Cold War ménage-à-trois.

The show also weaves in the fact that Martha isn’t really Martha, but an alias for one Carolyn Martens, who 30 years later will go on to lead both MI6’s Russia desk and the hunt for an assassin by the name of Villanelle.

The show was produced for BBC iPlayer, BBC One and ZDF, in association with Fifth Season, which is selling globally.

The show has also been sold to Sky (New Zealand), Hot (Israel) and OSN+ (Middle East and North Africa).

Honey’s cast is led by Ann Skelly (House of Guinness), Nate Mann (Masters of the Air), Jannis Niewöhner (Napoleon), and Rory Kinnear (The Diplomat).

Emma Moran is lead writer and EP, with Emme Hoy also writing. Sally Woodward Gentle and Lee Morris EP for Sid Gentle and producer is Christopher Hall.

Jennifer Ebell, exec vice president of TV distribution at Fifth Season, said: “Honey is exactly the kind of bold, distinctive series we want to bring to the international market.

“It has the sharp wit, complex characters and unexpected turns that audiences respond to, but with its own completely original voice.”
