Nippon TV unveils scripted format launches 

Japan’s Nippon TV is to unveil two new scripted formats at MIPCOM including a show picked up globally by Netflix and a dark romantic mystery centered on two journalists who fall in love while reporting on a serial killer.

Murderous Encounter (10 x 60 minutes) debuted in Japan in April and explores what happens when one of the reporters is accused of being the murderer.

The Reluctant Preacher premiered in April in Japan, with Netflix picking up global streaming rights.

It follows an unmotivated teacher assigned to a troubled class, who unexpectedly transforms into a passionate preacher delivering bold sermons that inspire her students and shake up the entire school.

 

TGC to beam Lighthouse format globally

Phil Gurin’s LA-based TGC Global Entertainment has acquired international rights to Norwegian reality competition format Code Red: The Lighthouse.

The deal was brokered by Cecilia Ingebrigtsen, TGC GE’s sales and acquisitions agent for Europe and the Nordics and Bente Sagplads, head of international formats and program sales at Norwegian broadcaster NRK as part of the two organisations’ collaboration announced a year ago.

Code Red: The Lighthouse (aka Kode Rød: Fyret) is set to launch in Spring and explores how 10 humans react when they are stranded on a remote island, with only a lighthouse available to communicate with the outside world.

 

BBC returns to Rob Rinder and Rylan

The BBC has ordered a third arts travelogue fronted by Rob Rinder and Rylan, with the pair heading to Greece.

Rex TV will once again produce the 3 x 60-minute BBC2 series Rob and Rylan’s Greek Odyssey, following the Bafta-winning Rob & Rylan’s Grand tour, set in Italy, and Rob and Rylan’s Passage to India.

In the upcoming series the unlikely friends will aim to discover the philosophy, art and culture of the ancient Greeks travelling from the Acropolis in Athens to the Oracle at Delphi and unpacking the idea of the likes of Socrates, Pericles and Homer. Read more
