Netflix has started production on an adaptation of Santiago Díaz’s crime thriller novel series, Jotadé.

The Spanish-language show is set in Madrid and stars Isaac Díaz, Aura Garrido, Jose Coronado and Jaime Lorente.

Daniel Calparsoro directs, with the four-episode limited series based on the first novel in the series of novels, which are published by Alfaguara (Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial).

MOD Producciones is behind the series, with Fernando Bovaira serving as producer and Guillem Vidal-Folch as executive producer.

The drama tracks the life of titular character Jotadé, an unconventional police officer who is brazen and irreverent, but also sharp, sincere and loyal to both his colleagues and his Romani community.

The story explores how the detective adapts to life after being assigned to investigate a brutal crime that conceals a dangerous criminal network.

Isa Sánchez and Daniel Corpas write, and Daniel Calparsoro (Bank Under Siege) is director.

The order is the second greenlight for Netflix in Spain in as many days, following news on Monday that production has started on an adaptation of Leopoldo Alas’s classic Spanish novel Clarín. They come less than two weeks after global chief content officer Bela Bajaria was replaced by former Disney alum Peter Rice.
