Atresplayer in Spain is moving into vertical series, marking a first for a broadcaster in the country.

The BVoD service of Spain’s Atresmedia has unveiled its first microdrama with Una Novia por Navidad (aka A Christmas Bride), which is being produced in collaboration with local label La Charito Films.

The show will stream within Atresplayer’s Flooxer strand of shows and consists of 60 episodes that run for between one and three minutes.

The series, which stars Marina Baeza and Carla Flila, features a woman who experiences the worst Christmas of her life after a sudden break-up but then finds solace after forming a special connection with her brother’s girlfriend.

Atresplayer has found success among younger viewers in Spain over recent years, attracting the attention of broadcasters and streamers across Europe.

In September it struck a far-reaching 300-hour deal with Disney+ that includes day-and-date series launches of key series.

Vertical series, meanwhile, continue to grow in popularity having boomed in Asia and more recently the US.

Recent deals have seen Fox taking a minority stake in Holywater while Disney+ is understood to be exploring its own version of shortform vertical series, as revealed by Broadcast International.
