Bristol-based digital broadcaster Eicom has launched its long-mooted second performance channel on the BSkyB platform.

Performance MainStreet targets older music and arts fans with coverage of blues, rock, jazz and big band.

It will feature concerts from stars such as John Lennon, Genesis, Cat Stevens, Deep Purple and Santana.

Details of the channel first emerged in late 2005 with a summer 2006 launch initially planned.

The first month's schedule includes classic series like The Old Grey Whistle Test, which ran from 1971 to 1987 on the BBC and hosted many seminal acts of the era including the first UK performance by Bob Marley and the Wailers.

Documentaries include a series on the greatest ever guitarists that features both Jimi Hendrix to Eric Clapton.

Also included on the channel will be filmed versions of books by famous authors like Stephen King, J.K. Rowling, Tom Clancy and Nick Hornby.

Performance MainStreet will be located on Sky's EPG (electronic programm guide) on channel 271 next to the existing Performance Channel on 270.
