Department for Culture, Media & Sport minister Janet Anderson has announced that the TV licence fee will increase by£5 to£109 from 1 April next year. The black and white fee will also increase, from£34.50 to£36.50. The rate of increase was set according to a formula revealed earlier this year by culture secretary Chris Smith, following a review of the future funding of the BBC by an independent review panel chaired by economist Gavyn Davies. The price rise is expected to bring an extra£200m a year for the BBC to spend on an improved service.

Anderson explained: 'The formula will enable the BBC to provide a strong and distinctive schedule of benchmark quality programmes.'
