Base FX is opening a London studio, which will be led by industry veterans David Fowler as creative director (pictured above left) and Alasdair MacCuish (pictured above middle) as managing director.

Base FX was founded in 2006 by Chris Bremble (pictured above right) and has grown to become one of the Asia’s premier VFX companies.

It has production studios in Beijing, Kuala Lumpur and Los Angeles and has earned three Emmy Awards for its work on HBO’s The Pacific, Boardwalk Empire, and Black Sails, a BAFTA Award for Best Visual Effects for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, along with Academy Award nominations for Best Visual Effects for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and The Batman.

The London studio represents Base FX’s first European facility. It will leverage the UK’s talent pool, tax incentives, and strategic position at the heart of the international film and television industry.

With its expansion into London, Base FX aims to strengthen relationships with European clients while bringing its expertise in high-end creature and character animation, fluid and dynamic effects, and photo-real 3D matte painting and set extensions to the UK market.

David Fowler joins Base FX as creative director. He has over two decades of visual effects experience across features and high-end television on both production and facility sides. Fowler has previously worked at MPC, Warner Bros and Digital Domain (London) and his credits include the Harry Potter franchise, King Arthur, and Fantastic Beasts.

He recently served as visual effects supervisor on One Life, Golda, and the upcoming Above the Below as well as visual effects executive producer on The Brutalist, Fight or Flight and Small Axe

“I’m thrilled to join Base FX at such an exciting moment in the company’s growth,” said Fowler. “Base FX has an outstanding reputation for delivering world-class VFX, and I look forward to building a creative team in London that upholds those standards while forging new partnerships across Europe.”

Alasdair MacCuish takes on the role of managing director. He has 25 years of post-production expertise gained at UK facilities including MPC, Cinesite and Framestore. His credits span early work on Tomb Raider, Sweeney Todd and Resident Evil through to recent productions including The Brutalist, The Salt Path and One Life.

“As the industry goes through immense changes, Base FX’s commitment to innovation and excellence made this an ideal opportunity,” said MacCuish. “The combination of the company’s technical expertise, proven track record on major features and episodics, and strategic vision for growth positions us perfectly to serve the UK and European market.”

“London is one of the world’s most dynamic creative hubs, and opening our studio here is a natural evolution for Base FX,” added Chris Bremble, founder and CEO of Base FX. “David and Alasdair bring exceptional leadership and deep industry relationships that will be instrumental as we build our European presence. This expansion allows us to serve our global clients more e4ectively while tapping into the incredible talent that makes the UK a powerhouse for visual effects.”

The London studio will offer a full suite of visual effects services, from early concept development through final delivery, and will work in close collaboration with Base FX’s established facilities across Asia.
