Planning permission has been granted to build padel courts and a sport centre on land currently used by the Versa Leeds studio. 

Versa, which also has facilities in London and Manchester, hasn’t responded to a request for comment on the news, and it is unclear what this means for the future of the studios on the rest of the plot.

Reporting from local paper The Telegraph & Argus describes the area as a “former” film studio, but the company is still advertising availability of, “over 140,000 sq ft of state-of-the-art production space, including four premium sound stages, offices and full on-site facilities,” at its Leeds location.

Leeds City Council has given its approval to build on over 50,000 sq ft of the plot, where Versa’s 27,000 sq ft stage four is situated. At the time of writing, Versa still advertises stage four as available on its site. There are three other stages on the site, totalling over 39,000 sq ft of studio space. 

The planning application, submitted by Quantum Padel, includes eight padel courts, a cafe/bar, in-house shop, changing rooms, therapy studios, meeting rooms, and staff facilities. It also describes the plot as “currently vacant”. 

Versa Leeds opened in 2020, and has hosted the likes of Prime Video’s Maintenance Required, Sylvester Stallone-produced film Giant, Sky’s Tinsel Town, and more.
