‘It was executed with high production values and surely would have brought some new audiences to cycling’

ITV Sport, ITV4 & YouTube

For possibly the last time, ITV Sport Production travelled to France to follow the world’s best known road cycling competition across 23 consecutive days, producing 21 live broadcasts and 23 comprehensive daily highlights shows for ITV4, as well as 23 exclusive, bespoke shows for YouTube.

Being constantly on the move meant the daily creation of completely unique, custom-built studio sets that dynamically reflected the specific location and environment of the day’s race stage, as well as moving from the flat expanse of the French countryside to high altitude Alpine stages and finally into the city of Paris.

Today At The Tour broadcast from onsite immediately after races, streaming live to YouTube to complement and support ITV’s linear coverage and provide more fan interaction through live Q&As. Some particularly compelling segments were also integrated back into the linear broadcasts.

Judges loved this integration of digital and linear content, as well as enjoying the “innovative” fan engagement through YouTube. One described the production as an “extraordinary feat of technical and engineering endurance,” while another said of Today At The Tour: “Rather than treating YouTube as an afterthought, it was executed with high production values and surely would have brought some new audiences to cycling.”
