ITV enjoyed its best primetime (19.00 to 22.30) share since the new look BBC 1 schedule began in mid-November. For one heady week, BBC 1 broke out to 31 per cent share back in October for the first week of 22.00 news bulletins - this week it fell again, to 26.9 per cent, exactly where it was this time last year.

The top 50 table is dominated as ever by Coronation Street (ITV, Monday 19.30) with a high of 15.78 million, then Heartbeat (ITV, Sunday 20.00) with 14.94 million. Only EastEnders contributes an audience in excess of 10 million for BBC - its best of the week being Tuesday with 13.94 million (BBC 1, 19.30).

ITV's event of the week was the final Morse - and it took no risks (ITV, Wednesday 20.30) to secure 13.66 million, helping the detective on his way with a one-hour special for Emmerdale, (ITV Wednesday 19.00) with 12.26 million and 14.6 million from Coronation Street (ITV, Wednesday 20.00). If only Morse could be reincarnated as a football commentator, Wednesdays would always be heavenly for ITV. Last week's Champions League match managed only 8.08 million.

Back in the ITV 10 million club, all five Emmerdale episodes put in an appearance, leaving Millionaire in the unfamiliar top 50 position of 13th place (ITV, Monday 21.00), with 11.29 million and a further two 10 million-plus episodes.

Finally, before focusing on BBC 1's programmes, it seemed I worried unnecessarily about Cold Feet last week - with 9.87 million (ITV, Sunday 21.00) it completed a top 20.

This is the point where BBC 1 programmes finally make some impact on the top 50, thanks to Monday when Changing Rooms picks up 9.97 million EastEnders viewers (BBC 1, Monday 20.30) and One Foot in The Grave (BBC 1, Monday 21.00) attracts 9.45 million before The Royle Family's 8.95 million (BBC 1, Monday 21.30). And there are contributions from This is Your Life with 9.41 million (BBC 1, Thursday 20.00), Antiques Roadshow (BBC 1 Sunday 18.45) with 9.02 million and the Saturday pairing of National Lottery Stars (BBC 1, Saturday 19.45) with 8.52 million and Casualty (BBC 1, Saturday 20.10) with 8.92 million.

Triumphantly in 38th place is the News at 22.00 (BBC 1, Friday) with a massive 7.24 million share - 5.8 million had been the previous week's best. Something different this week? It was Children in Need night.

The weakness of BBC 1's portfolio is illustrated by the lowly place of State of the Planet in the factual top 10. Christie's Story (ITV, Tuesday 22.00) - about the struggles of a obese 24 year-old woman - with 7.62 million, was the highest rated factual programme of the week, followed by Animal Hospital (BBC 1, Tuesday 20.00) with 7.13 million. ITV got 6.43 million for House of Horrors (ITV, Monday 20.30), losing out to Changing Rooms. BBC 1's next best was Airport (BBC 1, Thursday 20.30) with 6.13 million, losing out to Millionaire. And then four ITV shows with 5 million: an hour of Builders from Hell 2 (ITV, Friday 21.30), Britain at War in Colour (ITV, Thursday 22.00), After They Were Famous (ITV, Monday 22.40) and Savage Planet (ITV, Wednesday 22.30) beating Match of the Day in Turin for the make-do England v Italy friendly (BBC 1, Wednesday 22.35) with 3.66 million.

Only then is there a place for the State of the Planet (BBC 1, Wednesday 21.10) with 4.37 million - never mind global warming, Attenborough was simply swept away by the great Thaw.

The pink shape relates to the demographic of viewers for BBC 1's Sunday night adaptation of Kingsley Amis' Take a Girl Like You, while the dotted line shows ITV's demographic for the same period for Granada's Cold Feet. The scale of the chart is an index of 50 to 150 where 100 represents the average. The chart shows BBC 1's skew towards ABC 1 adults by comparison with ITV which has a much more even spread of all demographic groups, excluding children. BBC 1 was watched by slightly fewer women than ITV and slightly more adults.
