ITV put comedy back into the heart of its schedule as it announced its autumn line-up this week, writes Steve Aston.

The Sketch Show comedy series created by Steve Coogan indie Baby Cow is a return to sketch-based comedy for ITV and is joined by satirical sketch show 2DTV, created by Have I Got News for You and Spitting Image producer Giles Pilbrow.

The shows have emerged from ITV controller of comedy Sioned Wiliam's£1m comedy pilot project set up last year (Broadcast, 18.2.00). She said: 'I don't want to rush in and make any great claims about it. Comedy only becomes a cornerstone when people grow to love it.' ITV has struggled in recent years to find a hit comedy.

Other programmes in the autumn line-up include drama My Beautiful Son from Granada and Micawber from Yorkshire TV.

- Carlton has struck a deal with comedy club Jongleurs to set up a scriptwriting workshop, The Factory.

The broadcaster hopes to build up a team of writers in a similar way to the American model where dozens of writers work on a single show. The best projects from The Factory will be put forward for commissions and piloted by Carlton and comedy indie KDR Productions.
