The BBC is to ramp up its strategy for using social media after hiring its first social media manager.
Chris Jones, who currently edits the ‘About the BBC’ blog, will have the task of ensuring the BBC uses social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook to spread the word about its shows, and to engage the potential audience.
He will report to Paul Almond, the incoming head of digital communications, who said Jones will develop a corporate digital presence for the BBC across social media, and look at ways of using social media to change the BBC’s internal communications culture.
He will largely work with publicists, marketing teams and producers to develop strategies for individual BBC brands.
Jones was a BBC Music producer before joining indie Somethin’ Else.
He rejoined the BBC last year. In March, ITV appointed publicist Ben Ayres as social media and online engagement manager, and last month C4 made Steve Berry digital publicity manager.
