A feature length documentary based on the BBC's hit natural history series The Blue Planetis to be released in American cinemas after Miramax Films acquired the distribution rights.

Deep Blue , produced by BBC Worldwide and Germany's Greenlight Media, explores life above and below the ocean's surface and includes a score from composer George Fenton, performed by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. It is narrated by actor Michael Gambon.

The movie is the first of several co-productions planned between BBC Worldwide and Greenlight Media.

BBC Worldwide chief executive Rupert Gavin said: 'Working with Miramax, with its major expertise in North America, will ensure this amazing cinema experience reaches the widest possible audience in this very important market.'
