Unit closing due to pressures of documentary landscape

A24 is shuttering its docs division, reports have emerged over the weekend.

Five roles will be impacted by the closure of standalone unit, which is behind titles including Netflix’s The Deepest Breath and Steve McQueen’s Occupied City, our sister publication Screen confirmed.

Those affected by the move are division head Nicole Stott (Still: A Michael J. Fox Story) and head of documentary production Emily Osborne. However, the duo are to stay in position to complete the unit’s current projects, which include wrestling doc Death Match and true-crime title The Yogurt Shop Murders.

A24 will continue to represent recently titles including Architecton and Andre Is An Idiot.

A source told Screen that the move is a response to challenging conditions in the documentary business, and the company has not closed all avenues for working with documentary filmmakers.

A24 has been building up its TV arm in recent years with UK comedies Such Brave Girls and Dreaming Whilst Black as part of its slate. It recently scored an Apple TV+ order for a comedy adaptation of The Husbands. It is also behind the BBC adaptation of Douglas Stuart’s Booker Prize-winning Shuggie Bain, which was commissioned in 2022.
