Blue Ant Media has acquired global distribution rights to Rory Kennedy’s feature doc, The Trial of Alec Baldwin.

The show will be launched at Mipcom next month and follows the actor through the personal and legal fallout from the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust in 2021.

It tracks the legal and media storm that followed the event, providing access to the actor and exploring questions around celebrity, media scrutiny and public judgment.

The doc, which has been in the works since March 2023, includes unseen behind-the-scenes footage and reconstructs the events surrounding Hutchins’ death. Blue Ant’s vice president of acquisitions Valentina Daley landed the deal.

Barnaby Shingleton, senior vice president of acquisitions at Blue Ant Rights & Streaming, said: “Through Rory Kennedy’s thoughtful and incisive lens, The Trial of Alec Baldwin gives viewers a revealing look at a tragedy that made headlines worldwide.

“The film’s extraordinary access puts audiences in the room with Baldwin as key developments unfold, offering a rare perspective on how celebrity, media scrutiny and public perception shaped the case. It’s a globally recognised story that will resonate with viewers who want to look beyond the headlines and better understand this complex case.”

Kennedy, who has been behind docs including Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing and Ethel, added: “The tragic events surrounding Rust captured worldwide attention and raised difficult questions about celebrity, media scrutiny and public judgment. We want to give audiences around the world an opportunity to see this complex story from a different perspective.

The doc will have a limited theatrical premiere in the US from 1 October, with Abramorama handling rights.
