London-based detective drama finds domestic home having been sold around the world

Sherlock and Daughter

HBO Max in the UK & Ireland has picked up rights to the first season of well-travelled drama series Sherlock & Daughter.

The eight-part show will debut on the streamer on 5 November with episodes airing weekly through to 24 December.

The detective drama, created and written by Brendan Foley, debuted on The CW and HBO Max in the US in June 2025 and reached the top-four in its first week.

It was co-produced by Starlings Entertainment’s UK affiliate Albion Television and StoryFirst in association with The CW, together with financiers Krempelwood and MBM3.

Sherlock & Daughter stars David Thewlis as Holmes, and tracks the detective as he attempts to crack a sinister case. He pairs up with a young Native American woman - played by Blu Hunt - who is exploring the mysterious murder of her mother, and together they set out to solve the case and find proof that she is, indeed, his daughter.

Dougray Scott is villainous professor Moriarty, with Foley EP and The Closer alum James Duff showrunner. Writer Shelly Goldstein and writer/consultant Micah ‘War Dog’ Wright are also attached.

The show is sold by Federation Studios outside of Germany, Austria and German-speaking Europe, where Palatin Media distributes. Previously announced buyers include SBS in Australia, NRK (Norway), SVT (Sweden), DR (Denmark), YLE (Finland), RUV (Iceland) and Amediateka CIS.

AB1 in France, Sky in Italy and Crave in Canada are among a slew of other companies that have acquired the show.

“It’s an honor to bring a show that has become such an international hit home to HBO Max in the UK and Ireland - both the home of its setting and where it was made in Dublin and London by a fantastic cast and crew, led by mighty performances from David Thewlis, Dougray Scott and Blu Hunt,” said Foley.

“In these bumpy times, we’re very proud it has appealed so widely across generations worldwide, from new younger followers to veteran fans of the world’s greatest detective.”

Starlings chief exec Karine Martin added: “Sherlock Holmes may belong to London but it took a global audience to make this homecoming truly extraordinary. We’re thrilled to bring Sherlock & Daughter back to the streets that inspired the legend – and to give viewers throughout the UK and Ireland a fresh mystery to call their own.”
