AMC has greenlit a NASCAR drama series starring Dennis Quaid in the lead role.

Thunder Road, from AMC Studios and NASCAR Studios, is set to start production this summer and will debut on AMC and streamer AMC+ in 2027.

The show follows the multi-generational saga of the fictional Whitlock family and their decades-long legacy in stock car racing.

Quaid plays the patriarch of a racing empire built from nothing and who refuses to let it die, despite increasingly ruthless competitors who will stop at nothing to dethrone and destroy them.

The series is created and executive produced by John Fusco (Young Guns) with Taylor Elmore (Tulsa King) on board as showrunner and exec producer.

Additional EPs include Cliff Roberts (Untamed) with Syndicate Entertainment, and Mark L. Smith (Untamed, The Revenant, American Primeval), along with NASCAR Studios’ Tim Clark and John Dahl (The Last Dance). Gladys Cheng is producing.

Dan McDermott, chief content officer of AMC Global Media and president of AMC Studios, described the show as “a non-stop thrill ride for viewers.”

AMC has been expanding its sports-related shows recently, having partnered with NFL Films, Skydance Sports and Tom Brady’s Religion of Sports on Rise of the 49ers, which became the most-watched new original on AMC and AMC+ since The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.

The company confirmed this week it had expanded the franchise with Rise of the Saints, with Eli Manning’s Ten Till Productions attached.
