Three senior execs appointed as part of plans to expand UK-based company’s channels and streaming business across Iberia

BBC Studios has made three appointments, including hiring a former Paramount and SkyShowtime exec, as part of an expansion of its operations in Spain and Portugal.
A dedicated hub in Madrid is being launched to focus on its channels and streaming business, which will be led by country manager David Urgell Pérez.
He will oversee the company’s commercial strategy across the region, expanding relationships with distribution, platform and advertising partners, while also identifying new opportunities.
Urgell Pérez was previously vice president of distribution and partnerships at SkyShowtime, and before that heled senior roles at Paramount and Fox International Channels. He was most recently running his own consultancy, Neos Media.
BBCS already operates VoD service BBC Player in Spain and Portgual, as well as FAST channels BBC Top Gear, BBC Series, BBC Lifestyle, BBC History, BBC Food and BBC Earth.
The company claims its services reach more than 16 million in Spain via partnerships with firms ranging from Movistar Plus and Vodafone, as well as through connected TV and streaming platforms including LG Channels, Pluto TV and Rakuten TV.
Alongside Urgell Pérez, BBC Studios has also appointed Carlos Méndez as head of programming and Cristina Miquel as head of marketing.
Méndez will oversee content and programming strategy for Iberia, while Miquel is overseeing brand, communications and audience growth initiatives.
The Madrid team will work closely with BBCS’s existing distribution and advertising partners to increase commercial opportunities.
Arran Tindall, president of EMEA for Global Channels & Streaming at BBCS, said: “Spain is one of our fastest-growing markets in Southern Europe, with strong demand for premium British content creating new opportunities for greater audience reach, distribution and advertising partnerships.
“Establishing a dedicated local team will build on success we have already achieved and the significant opportunity ahead, deepening our relationships with local partners, strengthening our commercial and advertising proposition, and continuing to expand the reach of BBC Studios’ brands and content for audiences across Iberia.”
Urgell Pérez added: “BBC Studios has built a strong foundation in Spain through its premium content, channel portfolio and trusted partnerships. The opportunity now is to build on that momentum and accelerate growth across FAST, streaming and commercial opportunities.”
