Acclaimed Spanish scripted exec Sonia Martínez Ruiz has joined LatAm production giant El Estudio to oversee its expansion in Europe.

Sonia Martínez Ruiz left Buendía Estudios at the beginning of the year and becomes director of content in Spain for El Estudio.

The production company was founded by Pablo Cruz, who leads its operations alongside vice president for Mexico Juana García Blaya, and chief financial officer Julieta Bernabó.

The company is a major producer in LatAm with titles including El Baile de Los 41 and Las Crónicas del Taco for Netflix, and Pena Ajena for ViX+.

It is now looking to expand its operations in Spain, where its feature line-up includes Voy a Pasármelo Bien and Deseo for Netflix. The prodco was also behind Venganza for Amazon MGM Studios.

Martínez Ruiz is widely regarded as one of the most influential scripted execs in Spain having worked on shows including Money Heist, Vis a Vis and Farina. Prior to Buendía Estudios, she held positions at Mediaset España, Atresmedia and sibling Atresmedia Studios.

She will now lead the creative strategy for El Estudio in Spain, overseeing the development and production of film and television projects.

Martínez Ruiz said El Estudio offered the chance to join a company “with a very clear identity, great creative ambition and a strong international focus,” adding that she would focus on shows that “connect with audiences worldwide.”

Cruz added: “It’s a privilege to have Sonia at El Estudio. I’ve followed and admired her work for years. Her experience, creative vision, and deep industry knowledge will be key to this new phase.

“Her joining reinforces our goal of continuing to build a leading company in Spanish-language content creation from Spain and Mexico for the world.”
