France Televisions has landed the first international remake of Belgian format The Expedition, which sees eight celebrities trekking through some of the world’s toughest terrain.

The show is based on the format that was created by Belgian producer Roses are Blue for Play 4 and SVoD Streamz.

It has already racked up three seasons in Belgium set in Greenland, Namibia and Patagonia, with the format sold by The Mole distributor Primitives.

The Expedition follows the eight celebrities as they are challenged to navigate extreme environments, testing their endurance, teamwork and resilience in the face of nature’s toughest conditions.

The French series will debut next winter and was filmed in Greenland earlier this year. Warner Bros. International Television Production France is producing.

Bruno Henriquet, president at WBITVP France, said the show had been “one of the toughest I’ve ever had to oversee.”

He added: “From geopolitical uncertainties to extreme, even by local standards, weather conditions, we had it all. But I think that the best answer and true testament to the strength of this format, is that even with all this turmoil what truly shines is the human adventure.”

Simone de Pruyssenaere de la Woestyne, managing director at Primitives, added: “The format’s unique blend of spectacular adventure and authentic human storytelling has resonated strongly with Belgian audiences, and we’re thrilled to see it travel to a major international market for the very first time.”
