Canada sets 15% local streamer spend

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) will require streamers operating in the country to spend 15% of their local revenues on local content.

The move follows the introduction of a 5% spend in 2024 and will affect global players such as Netlix, Prime Video and Paramount+.

Traditional broadcasters will contribute 25% of their annual revenues to support Canadian and Indigenous content, which is down from current requirements ranging from 30% to 45%.

It is expected the move will deliver local production funding of around $2bn. The CRTC has also told streamers and broadcasters to improve the discoverability of Canadian and Indigenous content.

Restored Jackass returns to Paramount+

Paramount+ in the US has relaunched restored versions of Jackass S1-S3.

The episodes were removed at the request of Johnny Knoxville and the original creatives so the production team could revisit and restore key elements that had been altered over time.

“In the time since the release of Jackass 26 years ago, the television episodes had been re-edited, re-sequenced, and re-scored to the point they were unrecognizable,” Knoxville said. “But kudos to Paramount for giving us the $$ to restore the shows to how they initially aired in the first place.”

The relaunch comes ahead of the upcoming Paramount Pictures theatrical release Jackass: Best and Last, which debuts in theaters 26 June.
