La Mesías

Global film distributor and streamer Mubi has acquired Spanish religious drama La Mesías.

Directed by Javier Ambrossi (La Bola Negra, Paquita Salas) and Javier Calvo (La Bola Negra, Paquita Salas), the Movistar Plus original series is produced in collaboration with Ambrossi and Calvo’s label Suma Content.

The seven-part drama spans three decades and follows a man who was raised in a religious cult.

When, as an adult, he sees a viral music video by a Catholic pop group made up of several young sisters, he recognises them as his long-forgotten half-sisters. He is forced to face memories of growing up under the control of a mother with messianic delusions and attempt to save the girls from a dangerous fate.

La Mesías, selected for Sundance and San Sebastián film festivals, first aired in 2023 on Movistar Plus+ in Spain.

It stars Lola Dueñas (Volver), Macarena García, Carmen Machi, and Cecilia Roth (Pain and Glory).

The deal, which excludes Italy, Spain, LatAm and North America, was closed with Movistar Plus International. La Mesías will stream exclusively from Mubi on 3 September this year in the UK, Canada, Turkey, The Netherlands, Germany, France and Australia.
