Netflix and Spanish broadcaster Atresmedia have paired up with Buendía Estudios on a remake of María Dueñas’ novel Sira.

The book, a sequel to international hit The Time in Between, is being developed through Bilbao-based Buendía Estudios Bizkaia.

It will see Adriana Ugarte return to her role as Sira Quiroga, who starred in the Time In Between as a clothesmaker-turned-spy for the British government.

The Time In Between, an adaptation of Dueñas’s 2009 novel, was produced by Boomerang TV and released by Atresmedia in 2013, becoming the broadcaster’s biggest hit for a dozen years. It was subsequently picked up by Netflix.

Its sequel, Sira, will now go into production later this year and will debut on Atresmedia’s Antena 3 before landing on Netflix across “several international territories”, according to producers.

Buendía said the deal highlighted “the growing trend of Spanish and international streaming services collaborating on major projects.”

Ignacio Corrales, chief exec at Buendía Estudios, described the show as “a highly significant project” for his company.

“It expands its scope and consolidates new business models that integrate intellectual properties, television networks, platforms, and top-tier talent from both national and international markets.

“This is a very challenging model to achieve, the result of a determined and intense effort over several years.”

Laura Abril, the former Paramount exec who joined Buendía Estudios as exec vice president of scripted and global business development in 2023, said streamer/broadcaster collaboration has become vital to get premium projects greenlit over recent years.

“Taking on a project like Sira is a challenge that matches its ambition: a maximum level of creative and production demand. That’s why having a great team and the support of partners like Atresmedia and Netflix is key,” she said.

“This financing and collaboration model is proving to be the most effective way to bring large-scale, internationally-reaching stories to life. This alliance gives us the opportunity to take Sira far and bring it to a broad and diverse audience.”

Sonia Martínez (The Time in Between, Money Heist) and Paloma Molina (Elite, When Nobody Is Watching) are executive producers, while Dueñas is creative executive producer.

Sira was published in 2021 and has so far sold 800,000 copies in Spain and Latin America. The international translations are numerous, including English, French, Italian, Dutch, and Arabic. Editorial Planeta publishes with Scenic Rights handling the representation of its audiovisual adaptation rights.

Buendía Estudios previously worked with Netflix and Atresmedia on Ángela, while its slate also includes Galgos (Movistar Plus+), G.E.O. Beyond the Limit (Prime Video), and Poor Devil (HBO Max).

Upcoming shows range from film Sin Cobertura to returning seasons of Marbella and Little Faith for Movistar Plus+ and Las Hijas de la Criada for Atresplayer.
