High-profile order comes alongside the latest rapid response Instadoc, exploring the Donald Trump plane mystery
Netflix has unveiled a three-part documentary on Friends actor Matthew Perry alongside the latest instalment of its quick-turnaround ‘Instadocs’ strand unpacking a recent operation to smuggle Donald Trump off Air Force One.
The One About Matthew Perry is set to land on the streamer on 27 October, while The Decoy Plane will drop on 4 September, after the Instadocs strand launched quietly in May.
The Perry doc will explore the life and legacy of the late actor, from his time playing Chandler Bing on sitcom Friends to the wider impact of his candour about his struggles with addiction.
Perry died following an accidental drug overdose in October 2023, aged 54.
The three-parter, directed by Mary Robertson (Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV) and produced by Sony Pictures Television’s Maxine Productions, will feature never-before-seen photos and videos supplied by the Perry family, as well as interviews with his sister Mia Perry Bowick and Perry’s close friends.
“Matthew Perry was one of the comedic geniuses of our time,” Robertson said. “Through his many films, TV, and stage performances, and his unforgettable portrayal of Chandler Bing, he made millions of us laugh, connect, and feel a little less alone.
“He also gave us so much more by bravely speaking about addiction. Yet the public only knew part of his story. That’s why we set out to make this series: to let the people who knew and loved Matthew reveal the person behind the public figure.”
Robertson serves as an exec producer alongside Lisa Kalikow, Eli Holzman, and Aaron Saidman, with Lora Moftah as co-executive producer, and Jessica Call as producer.
Elsewhere, The Decoy Plane has been revealed in the latest film in Netflix’s Instadocs strand – the fast-turnaround current affairs series made by Words + Pictures.
The Decoy Plane dives into a peculiar incident in July this year, in which the Secret Service smuggled US President Donald Trump off Air Force One in a catering van and onto a second plane, right under the noses of the Washington press corps.
The single will feature interviews with White House reporters, a former Air Force One crew member and a former Secret Service agent.
Steve Yaccino served as showrunner and as an executive producer, with Josh Tyrangiel, Connor Schell, Libby Geist, Aaron Cohen and Alexa Conway, also exec producing, while Amel Guettatfi and Rakhee Jethwa were supervising producers.
