Production company will go independent later this year after eight years with streamer
Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground is to leave its Netflix deal to go fully independent.
Higher Ground had been under a production pact with the global streamer since 2018, following the company’s launch.

It extended its partnership with a first-look deal that was inked in 2024.
The Crip Camp and American Factory producer will become fully independent once its first-look deal ends later this year.
Former US president Barack Obama revealed the news during a HistoryTalks event in the US, over the weekend.
Higher Ground has been behind more than 20 projects for broadcasters, streamers and cinema, including Netflix feature Leave the World Behind and docuseries Our Great National Parks.
Last year, it landed a Netflix drama about convicted cryptocurrency fraudsters Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison, titled The Altruists.
The company already has a smattering of projects in the works outside of Netflix, most notably Larry David and Jeff Schaffer’s Life Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, which debuts on HBO in June.
