Local content quota law passes in Australia
Australia’s federal parliament has passed the Labor government’s local content quota legislation that will affect global streamers such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Services that have more than one million Australian subscribers will need to invest at least 10% of their total expenditure in the country – or 7.5% of their revenue – on local drama, children’s, documentary, arts and educational programmes. Reality is excluded.
Streamers have three years to meet the new requirements and will face fines of up to ten times their annual revenue if they do not meet quotas, details of which were revealed last earlier this month.
Numerous countries across Europe have already introduced local quota regulations on streamers, while Australia has been toying with the idea for more than a year.
