36% year-on-year increase in viewer hours takes it to 21.2 million

Sky Sports has revealed that the 2025 Open was its most watched ever, with 21.2 million viewer hours over the four days. 

That was a 36% increase on the 2024 edition of the golf major, and comes combined with year-on year increases for both average and peak audiences on every day of the competition, which ran 17-20 July. It has been an impressive start to the year for golf on Sky Sports, with the Masters’ final day also breaking records for the broadcaster.

Day 1 (Thursday): Averaged 338k (+39% YoY), peaked at 572k (+49% YoY

Day 2 (Friday): Averaged 378k (+38% YoY), peaked at 622k (+26% YoY)

Day 3 (Saturday): Averaged 590k (+32% YoY), peaked at 851k (+16% YoY)

Day 4 (Sunday): Averaged 681k (+41% YoY), peaked at 1.14 million (+19% YoY)

Sky Sports brought a number of innovations to The Open this year, including using a Spidercam for the first time at a golf competition. It also added a moveable stage in the Open Zone, with projected putting lines to replicate real putts from the course; Sportsbox AI to convert swing footage into 3D avatars for detailed analysis; and its SkyScope AR tool, allowing 360° swing breakdowns with lifelike avatars. 

The Open saw world No.1 Scottie Scheffler claimed his maiden Open title, moving closer to a career grand slam. Golf fans and Sky Sports will now be looking forward to the Ryder Cup, which take place in the US this September.
