Defeat to France helps ITV to best Saturday night since records began in 2002

World Cup 2022

23 million viewers tuned in to England’s 2-1 defeat to France at the Qatar 2022 World Cup on ITV and ITVX.

This is the biggest audience of the tournament to date, and the highest peak on any channel this year - with 15.1 million making the match the most watched programme on television on any channel this year for all viewers. It was also the most watched for 16-24-year-olds, with 2.5 million watching.

An average audience of 20.4 million viewers watched the match on all devices - with an average of 15.8 million watching the full live and exclusive coverage.

The match also helped ITV to its best Saturday night since records began in 2002. It was also the most ever streams on ITVX or ITV Hub, with 30 million logging on to watch over the day. The England v France match was streamed 15.3m times and Morocco’s win over Portugal, shown live on ITV earlier on Saturday, was streamed 8.2 million times.

This beats ITV’s 20.4 million peak for England’s last 16 victory over Senegal, but may be the peak with all home nations now out of the competition. The BBC has also seen large audiences for the competition, with 18.7 million for England’s final group game against Wales, and England’s opener against Iran becoming the most streamed event over 24 hours on BBC iPlayer with eight million.
