The BBC has confirmed a deal to show the next five World Athletics Championships.

In addition, it will broadcast the next three World Indoor Championships, including the 2024 edition being held in Glasgow.

These competitions add to the athletics already being shown by the broadcaster, which will also show the 2024 Olympics and every Diamond League event until that same year.

However, the BBC continues to not have a media rights deal with UK Athletics, with its last agreement ending in 2020 after the corporation decided its arrangement with the governing body wasn’t value for money - according to The Times. This year’s British Championships was streamed rather than on TV as a result.

Director of BBC Sport Barbara Slater said: “It’s fantastic news that the BBC will deliver these world-class athletics events, free to air to UK audiences.

“With so much UK talent emerging and athletes winning medals on the world and Olympics stage, the next few years are set to be an incredibly exciting time for the sport.”

The next World Athletics Championships is scheduled to be held in Oregon, USA in July next year, having been moved from a similar time in 2021 after the Olympics was forced to reschedule due to the pandemic. It will return to its usual ‘odd’ year in 2023, with Budapest, Hungary, set to host.
