England’s opening World Cup fixture was streamed eight million times on iPlayer and BBC Sport

World Cup 2022

England’s 6-2 victory over Iran at the World Cup broke the record for the largest live streamed event on the BBC over a 24 hour period.

Eight million streamed the Three Lions’ opening game at Qatar 2022 through iPlayer or BBC Sport, adding to the peak TV audience of 8.1 million - 70% of the available viewers. Fans saw Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford, and Jack Grealish all hit the back of the net as Gareth Southgate’s side got its campaign underway successfully.

This comes after a peak of 7.9 million tuned into the opening match of the tournament between Ecuador and Qatar, compared to the 6.6 million who watched Peru v Denmark at a similar time during the 2018 World Cup.

The BBC is working with ITV on its technical provision at Qatar 2022, with the close proximity of each stadium to each other allowing for presentations to take palce on site for every game.
