Club looking for media director to replace Ian Nolan
Manchester United is searching for a media director after chief content officer Ian Nolan announced his departure from the club.
Nolan will be leaving the Premier League side in September, after almost seven years at Old Trafford. Nolan was responsible for launching Manchester United’s YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat and WhatsApp channels, as well as spinning off its women’s side’s content into separate channels.
He also launched the club’s official podcast, and a number of original content series across its digital and MUTV channels. Nolan worked more widely across the industry too, assisting the WSL with marketing and broadcast initiatives as well as its rebrand to Women’s Professional Leagues Limited, launching a social code of conduct to fight online hate, and launching United’s Creator Academy - an initiative to help young people into the sector.
With Nolan’s departure, Manchester Unites has renamed the role to media director, and is currently recruiting. The new position will report to chief communications officer Toby Craig.
Announcing the news on Linkedin, Nolan wrote: “I’m not embarrassed to say I shed a few tears the day I handed in my notice.
“It was not because I was unsure about leaving, but because this place has meant everything to me. Seven years… It has never been ’just a job’. It was a home, a family - a city and a club that adopted my family with kindness, and now they call it home.
“Someone once said football clubs are not normal businesses - they are like living, breathing organisms. That is because the people that work there have genuine love for their clubs. The people here (especially across my media teams) pour their heart and soul into their craft - thank you 🙏
“I’m not stepping away because I’ve fallen out of love with the club, or the team, or this city - it’s just my time…
“I’ll be leaving in September. But first… just thank you United. For everything.”
