Recast has agreed a deal to host the Dafabet African Premier League cricket competition on its OTT platform.

The tournament, hosted in Nairobi, Kenya, aims to showcase cricketing talent in the country as well as T20 specialists from around the continent. Its creation comes after the success of the European Cricket League, which attempts to bring cricket from non-Test playing nations to a wider audience.

Six teams will compete in the African Premier League, which will run from 25 March to 10 April and feature 33 live matches streamed to fans in the UK. The teams involved are the Mombasa Rhinos, Eldoret Elephants, Nairobi Lions, Kisumu Pythons, Nakuru Leopards and Thika Hippos.

The Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association has partnered with India-based production company Dreamcatchers to bring the tournament to screens, and they aim to make it the premier T20 competition on the continent within four years.

Every viewer will be entered into a draw to win digital moments from the series including the first ball, first boundary and first wicket, and will be authenticated with a Non Fungible Token (NFT).

Dreamcatchers director, Puneet Gautam, said: “The team at Dreamcatchers are excited to join Recast, which we believe is the perfect platform to give a UK audience direct, unrestricted and affordable access, to watch the inaugural APL.”

Melissa Payne, Blonde Ambitions founder (UK distribution partner) and Dafabet African Premier League board member added: “This was an easy decision for us to broadcast the APL via Recast, considering Recast allows us to go direct-to-consumer without any costs associated with building our own OTT platform, whilst effectively monetising viewership through microtransactions.

“This is a partnership that extends far beyond the inaugural event.  We are very much looking forward to working together to grow the League and build a fanbase both here in Africa and across other markets.”

Founder and CEO of Recast, Andy Meikle, continued: “The APL is an exciting competition with both ambitious plans and significant potential, we’re therefore delighted to bring it exclusively to a cricket loving, UK wide audience.”

It is the first live tournament to be broadcast on Recast, after the likes of Scottish Premiership side Hibernian FC and the World Parkour Championships have made use of the platform - which allows users to either pay for credits to watch or earn credits by watching ads and other activities. Rights holders aren’t charged up-front to host their content on the platform.
