Female-focused channel had faced accusations of sexism

Sky Sports Halo

Sky Sports has shut down its female-focused TikTok channel, Halo, three days after it was originally launched.

The channel had faced accusations of sexism, with some criticising its use of pink filters, calling itself the “little sister”, and more. This led to Sky Sports releaseing this statement on the channel: “Our intention for Halo was to create a space alongside our existing channel for new, young, female fans.

“We’ve listened. We didn’t get it right. As a result we’re stopping all activity on this account. We’re learning and remain as committed as ever to creating spaces where fans feel included and inspired.”

Sky Sports had originaly said that, “Halo aims to build a welcoming community for female fans, whether casual or committed, through fun, trend-led, and relatable content. Followers can expect a mix of, behind-the-scenes insights, sport fashion and lifestyle content, pop culture moments as well as match clips and, on occasion, live sport - blending entertainment, inspiration, and the latest sports news.”

Examples of the channel’s content included, a video of Erling Haaland’s recent goal with an assist from Rayan Cherki, captioned, “How the matcha + hot girl walk combo hits.” The only content now available on the channel is its launch video and closing statement.

Halo’s quick demise comes after another successful summer of women’s sport, with England winning both the Women’s Euros and the Women’s Rugby World Cup. A huge 16.2m audience tuned into the Euros final, while a record-breaking women’s rugby audience of 5.8m saw the Rugby World Cup final. In addition, the Women’s Sport Trust recently found that January-September of this year acheived the record average viewing time for women’s sport in the UK
