Channel 4 has handed one of the stars of The IT Crowd his own comedy as it looks to strengthen its struggling Friday night line-up.

Perrier award-winning comedian Richard Ayoade, who plays Moss in the Talkback Thames series The IT Crowd, will revive his character Dean Learner for the new show. Learner has previously featured in C4's 2004 spoof horror comedy Garth Marenghi's Darkplace.

The new 6 x 30-minute series, called Man to Man With Dean Learner, sees the fictitious international playboy host a chat show in front of a live studio audience at his luxury penthouse flat.

He will interview a range of his old showbiz friends, all played by comedian Matthew Holness but based on celebrity stereotypes.

Ayoade will also direct the series, which was commissioned by C4 head of comedy Caroline Leddy and is being produced by indie Avalon Television.

It has just gone into production and C4 has yet to set a transmission date.
