On Thursday (6 September), during an episode of the ITV1 reality cooking show, viewers saw the temperamental chef say: 'I don't think it was a pikey's picnic tonight.'

His use of the derogatory word for travellers sparked a row with singer and trainee chef Lee Ryan.

Ryan said to White: 'I have a lot of friends who are travellers... and I know they don't like being called pikeys.'

The Commission for Racial Equality has also criticised chef White for using the word.

Marco Pierre White says he will give up TV once this series of Hell's Kitchenhas finished.
