CBBC is to follow a group of children from Middlesborough as they create an event for their town on the afternoon of the Olympic Games’ opening ceremony.

CBBC stars including Blue Peter’s Barney Harwood and Newsround’s Ore Oduba will help the children, along with members of the Deadly Art Team and Stefan Gates of Incredible Edibles.

As well as organising the event, the children are responsible for giving the venue – the pavilion in Albert Park – a makeover. They must also create a brand new sporting activity for attendees to try out on the day.

Five-part series The CBBC Olympic Games Challenge will be stripped across the week ahead of the opening ceremony on 27 July, showing the highs and lows of planning the occasion. The series will culminate in a live show on the final day as the event takes place.

It was commissioned by outgoing CBBC controller Damian Kavanagh, and will be produced in house, with Owenna Griffiths and Gurdip Bhangoo exec producing.

Head of CBBC Productions Helen Bullough said: “Middlesbrough has really taken this project to heart – the enthusiasm and support has been tremendous.  And the CBBC Olympic Games Challenge will offer something distinctive and memorable for our audience across the UK.”

BBC North has provided additional investment for the CBBC Olympic Games Challenge through the BBC North Kicker Fund, which supports productions and initiatives that are made in the North of England.
