Pop Idol judge and ITV's new £2m signing Simon Cowell is to give this year's Richard Dunn memorial interview at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival.

Cowell, whose indie Syco is making X Factor , a major new pop contest for ITV, will give the interview to ITV marketing director Jim Hytner. Organisers say the outspoken music executive will talk about all aspects of his TV career to date including Pop Idol , American Idol and the launch of his indie. He will also give his views on the international television industry.

Cowell, who has built a career promoting pop acts such as Westlife, has become a household name and a key TV talent in a little over two years. His first foray was a judge of ITV's Pop Idol in 2002 and he has since gone on to make American Idol and World Idol , where he represented the US.

He started his career as a mailboy at EMI and now runs his own label, S Records, through BMG, which has had 35 No. 1 singles from acts such as Westlife and Five.

He joins a list of previous Richard Dunn interviewees which includes: ex BBC director general Greg Dyke, Chris Evans, Telewest chief executive Adam Singer and ITV chief executive Charles Allen.

This year's festival takes place between Friday 27 and Sunday 29 August.
