ITV has shelved long running detective drama franchise Rebus after almost eight years.

The show, based on Ian Rankin's hugely popular novels, initially starred John Hannah in the title role. Ken Stott took up the mantle in 2006 and has consistently pulled in audiences in excess of 4 million.

It has been reported that Stott has vetoed plans for more and that ITV does not want the drama, made by SMG Productions, to continue without him.

An ITV spokeswoman said: "At this time there are no plans to make any further episodes of Rebus, but one-off specials are a possibility for the future."
