Magic 105.4's Neil Fox beats Capital 95.8’s Johnny Vaughan in commercial breakfast show race.

Magic 105.4's Neil Fox has edged out Capital 95.8’s Johnny Vaughan as presenter of London's favourite commercial breakfast show by just 5,000 listeners per week.

According to today's Rajar figures for the third quarter of 2007, the Emap-owned station had 885,000 listeners per week at breakfast time, up from 823,000 listeners in the second quarter. This is the first time Magic has claimed the top spot.

Capital 95.8's breakfast show host Johnny Vaughan bounced back this quarter but stayed in second place with 880,000 listeners per week. Quarter-on-quarter Vaughan added 44,000 listeners per week, suggesting that Gcap Media’s multi-million pong advertising campaign has paid off.

Global Radio's Heart 106.2 was knocked from number one to number three with Jamie and Theakston and Harriet Scott attracting 810, 000 listeners per week, down 874,000 the previous quarter.

In terms of overall London listening, Heart and Magic were tied with 6.2% share each. Capital was in third place with 4.7%.

Emap managing director of radio programming Mark Story told Broadcast: "We are really pleased, it's also the third time in a row that Magic has held its position as number one station in the competitive London market with 1.94 million listeners."

Emap's shareholders are likely to be reassured by the performance, which could help prospects for the sale of the radio division later this year.

Emap is the publisher of Broadcast.
