Owned by the NFL and its 32 clubs, the NFL Network already has a presence in the UK through licence deals for 70 live games a year with ITV, Five and Sky Sports.
Now NFL executives believe the market in the UK is big enough to roll out its sports entertainment channel. A channel licence for NFL Network has been registered with Ofcom, although no launch date has been confirmed.
NFL Network has been on air in the US since 2003. It features supplementary programming to NFL fixtures, such as magazine shows, news and archive games. The American football season runs from September to February.
A spokesperson for the group said: "The amount of NFL programming has increased a lot in the past few years and we are thinking of launching in the UK. We have registered the name but there are no immediate plans."
