No Era Penal is now available on the Mundial YouTube channel

Mundial has produced No Era Penal, a documentary about Mexico’s dramatic exit from the 2014 World Cup and its wider footballing culture.
Mexico lost to the Netherlands in the last-16 of the 2014 tournament following a controversial penalty won by Arjen Robben, and El Tri has failed to ever make it past the quarter finals of the competition.
No Era Penal (Spanish for It wasn’t a penalty) features interviews with Mexico striker Raul Jimenez, former El Tri Head Coach Miguel Herrera, Mexican WWE legend and football fan Rey Mysterio, Alana Merez, founder of Latinx in Sports and Alex Esquivel, the co-founder of the Mexican streetwear brand Sad Boyz.
In addition to famous faces, there interviews with fans recorded ahead of the team’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including one fan attending his third World Cup match on home soil, having witnessed matches at both Mexico 1970 and 1986, as well as a look at the national stadium, Estadio Azteca.
Mundial, part of Footballco, has also partnered with Sad Boyz to release a limited edition t-shirt commemorating the 2014 defeat, as Mexico aims to get beyond its previous ceiling at the 2026 World Cup.
Mundial editor Asad Raza said: “With the US dominating much of the conversation in mainstream football media, we wanted to tell the story of a country with real World Cup roots, celebrating it’s culture but also how that culture and togetherness has enabled the nation to experience catharsis following a moment that’s defined Mexican football - and is something the country is looking to move past at this tournament.”
